Kansas Sampler Foundation introduces song to promote Kansas Small Town's

The Kansas Department of Commerce Travel and Tourism division and the Kansas Sampler Foundation are partnering to bring the Explore Rural Kansas project to our small rural communities.

The Explore Rural Kansas Partnership is expected to rely heavily on rural tourism and heritage alliances throughout the state.  The program is specifically aimed at attracting a particular kind of tourist who sets out to understand rural culture.

A catchy song with a driving beat will help launch this initiative promoting small Kansas towns.  Click here to listen to “Come and Get It (Feed Your Heart)”.

Lyrics to this song are:

In the car – radio – windows down – hit the road!
Clean air – open space – small towns – I just gotta go
It’s calling me – what to see – enchantment around every turn
County fairs and the best chicken fried steak in the world!
Chorus:
Come and get it – Feed your heart
All for you! Come on – Come and Get It, Feed your heart …

Café – spend a day – the mem’ries and peace you can find
Simple ways and hardware stores, the old fashioned kind
No traffic mess – leave the stress – and see with new eyes
Explore Kansas anew – Hey! It’s waiting for you!
Come on, come and get it – Feed Your Heart
All for you! Come on – Come and Get It, Feed your heart …
Picture the faces welcoming you
Smiles and miles and miles of things to see and do, just for you –
(Repeat chorus)

5000 Square Foot Pharmarcy under construction in Phillipsburg

On Monday March 9th, Rob and Stacie Wenzl, owners of Wenzl Drug, announced that construction of a 5000 square foot pharmacy that will take up around half the block on the southside of the square in Phillipsburg and include a drive thru window, is scheduled to get underway on the site this spring, with a grand opening scheduled for this fall.  A considerable portion of the new store will be dedicated to significantly increasing access to durable medical equipment services and products.  Wenzl Drug has recently completed the accrediation process required of providers of the DME (which includes items such as diabetic footwear and supplies, walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, scooters, nebulizers, hospital beds, etc.)

Says Rob Wenzl, “By completing the required accrediation process and expanding our DME services, we will be able to provide the residents of Phillipsburg and surrounding communities with the medical equipment they need without the hassle and expense of having to commute to a larger city in order to have access to these products.  We are committed to serving the residents of Phillips County.”

Stacie Wenzl  notes the key role the local economic development establishment played in brining the project about.  “The Phillips County Community Foundation and the Phillips County Economic Development boards have been extremely helpful in assisting us with this project, which would not be possible without them.  We are blessed to live in a community with so many wonderful people and economic development tools at hand.”

Statewide homeless count to be coordinated by United Way of the Plains in 2009

WICHITA, Kan. — Kansas Housing Resources Corporation has selected United Way of the Plains to coordinate “Everybody Counts,” a statewide count of homeless individuals on January 28, 2009. The selection was based on the recommendation of the Kansas Point-In-Time Partners, a group of community stakeholders and state organizations.

Volunteers in 40 counties of Kansas will go to shelters and targeted urban and suburban locations to survey homeless individuals. The goal is to count all homeless individuals who are staying in shelters or staying in cars, abandoned buildings, under bridges, etc. The process includes a survey to determine how long the persons have been homeless, what conditions led them to be homeless and other important information to help address homelessness.

United Way of the Plains will establish a standardized survey form, recruit volunteers, provide training to local county leaders and coordinate the counting process.

The sponsors of “Everybody Counts” Kansas Homeless Count are: Kansas Housing Resources Corporation and Kansas SRS Disability & Behavioral Health Services.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires a “Point-in-Time Count of Homeless Persons” across the country. Communities need accurate data on homelessness to determine the size and scope of the homeless problem at the local level, plan services and programs appropriately to address local needs, measure progress in addressing homelessness, and measure performance of individual programs and the system as a whole. HUD needs data to understand the extent and nature of homelessness throughout the country, to make funding decisions and more.

If you or anyone you know, needs to be included in this count, please contact Rhonda Keesee at (785) 543-5364 (h); 543-7850 (c); 540-4277 (w).
