Olliff-Boeve Furniture Celebrates 50 Years
Phillipsburg, Kansas has been a long-time home for many businesses, among those Olliff-Boeve Furniture and Appliance. Fifty years ago, Darel Olliff and Ron Boeve Sr. entered into the furniture business, purchasing the former McKinley Furniture Store. The purchase of the store from John and Kate McKinely and the upcoming opening was announced in March of 1959. At that time, the store was located in the current Sawyer’s Ace Hardware Building.
Darel and Ron began operating the store with Edith Boeve as the bookeeper and sales person. Later, Larry and Gary Boeve came on board to sell and lay floor covering.
In 1963, Olliff and Boeve opened their new store, the current location on the west edge of Phillipsburg. In 1976, Gary moved to Hays to operate Brock’s North Hill Chapel. And when Darel and Ron, Sr. sold out in 1983, Larry Irvin, an employee at the time, along with Larry Boeve became the new owners. Larry Boeve passed away in 2006.
Terry Frantz joined the partnership eight years ago following the closure of the True Value store and the appliance line was added to the store, making the new name Olliff-Boeve Furniture and Appliance. Charlie Radabaugh joined the busines four years ago, bringing his vast experience with appliance repair and mainitance into the partnership. Jim Tuxhorn was the latest to join the parnership in 2008, specialzing in floor coverings.
Olliff and Boeve Furniture and Appliance has seen many changes in their 50 years of business, and look forward to the future.

It's A Lot of Fun Shoppin'..... at Scott-McCoppin!
Just ask any of the countless life long customers of Ron and Stephanie Austin’s, and they will share with you the same sentiments the store ads “jingle” claims. “It is a lot of fun shoppin’… at Scott- McCoppin.”
If you are in the market for a good book or that perfect card, like the original owners; Ron and Stephanie have a wide variety of both. While they continue to sell the books and Hallmark cards which were part of the first owners inventory line, they also have expanded their stock to include candles, gift items, gourmet foods as well as jewelry.
The Scott-McCoppin Bookstore has been a part of the Phillipsburg Business community since 1938. This family owned business was started by Harriet Scott and Grace McCoppin. Ron Austin, a nephew of Harriet Scott; as a boy spent his summers in Phillipsburg helping his aunt at the store. Little did he realize it was training for a business he would eventually own.
On June 1, 1972, Ron and Stephanie Austin purchased the store from the two women and have been the owners every since. Ron and Stephanie have worked hard to maintain the business that was built by these women.
Stephanie is proud of the business she and her husband have worked hard to preserve and build. “We feel the store is an asset to the area, “she said. “We want it to perpetuate itself, as it has been perpetuated through Aunt Harriet and Grace and us.”
Phillips County Economic Development thanks Ron and Stephanie for the commitment and dedication they have shown for the 37 years they have been in business. We look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.
If you haven’t stopped by Scott McCoppin, be sure to do so. Then you will know…It’s a lot of fun shoppin’…. at Scott-McCoppin!!
